Troop 249 is sponsored by the Moraga Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Founded in 1960, we serve as the activity arm of the Moraga Ward's Young Men's organization. Fully staffed with adult leaders, and amply supported by the Ward, we offer a year-round, advancement-oriented program for young men ages 11 to 17. Our troop is run according to the Patrol Method, whereby scouts are given the responsibility to organize and carry out their own activities, with appropriate adult supervision and support. Led by a Senior Patrol Leader, who is an older scout, the organization of the troop into patrols provides opportunities for each of the scouts to have the kind of leadership role that helps a boy grow into an effective, self-confident and responsible young man. The troop leadership is supported by a committee of adults who facilitate the troop's activities. Parents are welcome to volunteer for needed tasks, but are not required to participate on the committee as a predicate for their son's membership. Troop meetings are held each Tuesday evening, and outings are held monthly. Each summer the younger scouts attend a traditional week-long scout camp where they may earn several merit badges and other awards, while enjoying the organized activities offered by the professional camp staff. Most older scouts choose to participate in a high adventure activity. Recent adventure trips have included: 50-mile backpack trips in the Sierras, whitewater adventures on the Snake and Klamath Rivers, and two exciting expeditions at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The Church sponsors much of our budget, including the costs of individual registrations, awards, and monthly outings. Scouts and families are required to pay for uniforms and personal equipment the scout may need, plus food purchases for each outing. A fundraiser is scheduled each year to help each scout earn enough money to finance his big summer activity (scout camp and/or a high adventure trek). Setting and achieving goals is one of the main lessons we try to teach our scouts. Thus, the Scout advancement program is a big part of our troop's operations. The Trail to Eagle is made up of many smaller goals the scout must achieve first. Success becomes a habit as he develops new skills and builds his sense of self-reliance. Most of our scouts eventually achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Along the way they accumulate many great memories of fantastic adventures and truly spiritual experiences. Meetings: Every Tuesday evening, 7:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 3776 Via Grenada, Lafayette, California (1/2 block from Moraga Road). If you are a scout-age young man interested in joining our troop, send us an email! |
